1970s A Decade of Firsts

The ‘70s brought use of the metric system, the first permanent IMAX theatre (at Ontario Place), the opening of the CN Tower (the tallest free-standing building in the world) and the launch of communication satellites. The Canadian hockey team won the 1972 Summit Series against the Russians and the Toronto Blue Jays played their first major League Baseball game in 1977.

Historical Highlights

-In 1971 a teleprinter installed by Central Ontario Regional Library linked Ajax with similar machines in the other libraries in the Region
-The Ajax Historical Board formed in 1971 and decided to preserve on microfilm the local newspapers. It purchased the first microfilm reader in order to make microfilm usable by the public.
-In 1974 the Village Branch became a part of the Ajax Public Library.
-The Main Branch of the Library was expanded with an official opening on June 21, 1975.
-Paperbacks were introduced for children in 1976
-Raffi visited the Main Branch in 1977 and had 300 children join in his songs.
-Joanne Tate becomes Chief Librarian after the retirement of John Vickers in 1979

Asparagus and Parmesan Quiche
One 9-inch deep-dish pie crust, baked
2 tsp Dijon mustard
12 asparagus spears, blanched and cut into 1-inch pieces
½ cup chopped cooked shrimp or crab
1/3 cup grated Canadian Parmesan cheese or ¾ cup shredded Canadian Cheddar Cheese
3 eggs
1 cup milk
¼ tsp pepper
Dash hot pepper sauce
2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill or tarragon
