In the home, the ‘60’s brought many new conveniences: dishwashers, electric can openers, coffee grinders, electric knives, Corningware with a “cornflower” pattern, Saran Wrap, Minute Rice, McCain’s frozen French Fries and freezer jam. Historical Highlights
- In 1960 the Library took over the second story of the building and opened a Boys and Girls Library.
- In 1960 the average annual cost of library service was $1.39 per resident from the Town’s taxes. Quite a bargain!
- On June 24, 1967 the new Ajax Public Library opened in the Municipal Complex at the corner of Harwood Avenue and King’s Crescent.
- 1968 saw the installation of a Xerox photocopier.
- An open-air reading court featuring attractive wrought iron furniture was installed in 1968.
- In May of 1969 the Library expanded to a 6 day service.
- Later that year large print books are added to the collections.

French Onion Soup
4 to 5 large yellow onions ( about 1 ½ lbs)
1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
3 Tbsp butter
3 cans (10 ¾ size) beef broth, undiluted
¼ tsp coarsely ground black pepper
1 bay leaf
Salt & pepper
2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese
3 cups water
6 – 8 slices French bread
1 cup grated Gruyere or Swiss Cheese
