He had four sisters; May, Margaret, Janet and Barbara. Lionel joined the Royal Navy when he was sixteen years old and worked as an Artificer, a non-commissioned engineer rank. He served on the Cyclops depot ship of the First Submarine Flotilla in the Mediterranean from 1932 to 1934, and in the cruiser Vindictive. By the time of the Battle of the River Plate he was in the position of Engineer Commander on the Ajax. After the battle it was announced that several men were to be promoted and Lionel was made Engineer Captain. He was also awarded the honour of Aide de Camp to His Majesty King George VI for his part on HMS Ajax at the Battle. Lionel's nickname was `Ginger'. He was married to Katie, or `Kit' as she was known. They never had any children but enjoyed a large extended family. Lionel died on October 13, 1966 after a prolonged illness.
