In 1940 he joined the Royal Navy and served most of his time aboard HMS Ajax. The same year George joined the war effort he also married Elizabeth Thornton. They are survived by one daughter, Jean, and two sons, Jeffrey and Alan. While on HMS Ajax George saw service in the Mediterranean and on Atlantic convoys. After the war, George returned to Shildon and successfully ran his shop until he passed away in 1976. Son Jeffrey took over the family business.
