John Gurr was born in 1907 and joined the Royal Navy as a teenager. He wrote a book titled ‘In Peace and In War’ based on his private diary kept during World War Two. It is the story of his life in the Royal Navy and includes episodes of the cruiser Ajax in its Battle with the Graf Spee, and the many later battles in the Mediterranean Sea.
John received the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on October 15, 1939 while serving onboard the Ajax.
After retirement John lived in Worthing on the South Coast of England. - Geographic Coverage
