He was initially a boy seaman on HMS Ajax assigned to `B' Turrett. He was only seventeen when the Ajax was engaged in battle with the Graf Spee. While in the service Dennis played football and rugby on the Royal Navy Team. He left the Royal Navy in 1953 and for a number of years ran a Pub in his home town of Kenning Hall in Norfolk. He then turned to a career as a Manager for a bedding and linen company. Unfortunately Carnelly Crescent was misspelled when the street was first assigned based on the handwritten Royal Navy forms.
