- Description
- A black and white photo of pouring TNT for trench mortars at Defence Industries Limited.
- Notes
- The three-inch trench mortars were processed on Line 2. The explosive used for the trench mortars was called Amatol, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and tri-nitro toluene (TNT). Both materials were heated to a liquified state before mixing. The Amatol loading was carried out by hand pouring, with temperatures of the liquid explosive controlled to a limit of three degrees. The bulk melt was carried out in a large steam-heated kettle on pivots, with two men in control. The explosive, when cooled, looked not unlike pale brown sugar candy.
