"There was a very strong national spirit. The people felt they were doing a great deal or doing a very important job towards providing the materials of war, and they knew how badly they were needed with so many ships being sunk on the convoys across the ocean and the losses in the air raids over Germany and over Europe. They realized fully how badly this material was needed and I think everybody pitched in and gave the best they could. They did a good job and when the bonds came out when the victory bonds came on sale they bought victory bonds and they had war savings certificates. I suppose some of those war savings certificates have never been cashed. They were probably kept for souveniers."
