CHAPTER 9 Right Wor. Bro. Alf Stewart of the Sturgeon Falls Lodge, made his "Official Visit", as District Deputy Grand Master, on April 8th 1971 and the evening was very unforgettable. Wor. Bro. Harold Stewart welcomed his dad, into the lodge. This was the first time a son was the Master of the lodge, when the father was the District Deputy Grand Master. Right Wor. Bro. Alf Stewart loved his lodge and his attendance was impeccable. He enjoyed his visits to other lodges, particularly the Elk Lake Lodge. The worst experience with the oil furnace occurred on April 13th 1972, when Bro. Bob McConkey went to fire up the furnace, in preparation for the District Deputy Grand Master's "Official Visit", that night. When he turned on the interior lights, the lodge and lunch room was still in complete darkness. On investigation, it was found that the furnace hadn't been shut off, since last month's meeting. A chimney pipe, in the basement had let go and the furnace was exhausting directly into the lodge, covering everything inside with a thick coating of black soot and the smell of fuel oil. As it was too late to cancel the supper at the United Church and notify all the brethren of the disaster, it was decided to go ahead with the supper and have the District Deputy Grand Master back, next month. The lodge's Insurance Company sent in cleaning people who worked very hard for the next three weeks, to restore the lodge to it's original condition. Some paper and severely soiled items had to be discarded, as they were too badly damaged. However, the hard work paid off and the lodge received the District Deputy Grand Master, Right Wor. Bro. Jack Mathews, on May 11 1972. CHAPTER 10 On March 16th 1976, the new Northern Secondary School was opened and the French students took over the old High School. The French - English relationship seemed to change, during this period. The French quit catering to the English as before. If a group of people were predominantly French, the language spoken was French. The government required hiring of bilingual people, in high French population areas. More French people became involved in every area of the community activities. The 75th Anniversary of the lodge was celebrated on September 27 1975, at an Emergent Meeting. A supper was held in the United Church basement and the District Deputy Grand Master, Right Wor. Bro. H.E. McDroy gave an inspiring address. After supper, the brethren went to the lodge, which was opened by Wor. Bro. Haig F. Clark. Some historical highlights of the lodge were given by Right Wor. Bro. Jack Leigh and five lodge Masters added their impressions, of the Sturgeon Falls Masonic Lodge. On April 12th 1979, Right Wor. Bro. Ross Fenton made his "Official Visit", to the Sturgeon Falls Lodge and a large delegation of brethren from other lodges, as well as the Sturgeon Falls Lodge, made for a wonderful evening. Right Wor. Bro. Fenton had established himself as the backbone of the Sturgeon Falls Lodge, for many years, as a lecturer, Installation Master and ritualist. His proudest achievement was installing his son Wor.
