He knew hard work; and was ready for the Union Sunday School. This new venture was a great success, foreshadowing the United Church of Canada. After the union of the Presbyterians and Methodists, the united congregations met as one in the Methodist building under the leadership of the Rev. J.I. McKay, who so successfully organized the Church of All Nations in Toronto in recent years. The deserted Presbyterian Church building was sold to the Men's Club; and later passed to the Independent Order of Oddfellows, ending its days being burned from a grass fire. Now again turning back the leaves of time about half a century, we find that when the Methodist Church was organized, the site for the building was donated by James Holditch, on the north-west corner of Holditch and John Streets. This indicates that James Holditch was also honoured by the name of a street. This was a wellearned reward, as ames Holditch also donated a site for the Public School building, on a lot next to the Methodist Church property. This environment should have some influence. Because of these gifts, one stubborn man was surely above acting from a spirit of spite. May he rest in peace. To return to the Methodist Church once again, we learn that the Rev. Mr. Smith was the first ordained minister. For some years only summer services were held. The deed of the Methodist Church property expressly states that the site shall be used exclusivley for the religious services of the Methodist Church, for ever. So five years after the opening of the Methodist Church Mission in the log school-h use. a small frame church was built.
