- This is a partial transcript of one of 3 correspondence books kept by Kenneth D. Marlatt during his service with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles in France, in 1916. Kenneth Marlatt rose from Lieutenant to Major during his service. The 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles was a cavalry unit which participated in many of the most famous battles of the First World War.

Tom has your flash light with best refill Collins could get.
I advanced Collins 1200 Fr for canteen & he had about 800 fr, so he has got a good start.
Could not get any glass chimneys – will try again

Summary of evidence of Pte #1442 CA BROOKS
I enlisted in Toronto about April 1915. I was in the second section of the M.G. under sargt. HARTLEY. Now Lieut in the C.I.B. M.G Co. I came over to England with the 4 CMRR While there I obtained a Pass to London where I was taken sick and admitted to a military hospital on ENDEL st. I was suffering from Pleurisy, Phneumonia, (sic) and Typhoid fever. I was there about three months and was then sent to a Canadian Convalsecent home at BROMLEY Kent. I was there for two and a half months. I ran away from there. The reason being I wished to rejoin my regiment. When I got to DIBGATE, I found that the regiment had left for France. Then I did not know what to do so I ripnted to a guard room there I stated my crose but they could do nothing for me. This was a Canadian guard under a Sargt. I then decided to try & get over to France myself. In this I succeeded, landing in Havre about the month of February 1916. I have been about six months trying to find my Regiment. When I was in Amiens I heard that the 4th CMR were in the line somewhere in the Somme District. I then gave myself up to the Police for the reason of getting back to my Regiment. I have never been attached or enlisted in any other Regiment except the 4 CMR. I can be identified by Lieut HARTLEY 8 ch CIBMG co. Pte CROCKER ds.

Did Capt Graham speak to you about sending us a hind quarter or a piece of tenderloin? I have been very much off colour for past few days & have not been able to eat any meat but wanted to try a nice steak, & that --------! on the dump has not given us a hind quarter for the past week. Please brain the brute if he does not send us either tenderloin or a hind quarter (with me in) tomorrow.
If you happen to have a nice steak I wish you would give bearer a small piece just enough for one.

Last June I sent Leiut. C H Peaker’s kit & personal effects in the usual way.
Have just received a letter from his mother Mrs. Rose Peaker. 190 Marlborough. Ave, Ottawa, Ont. Saying that none of this had been received. Leiut C H Peaker was first reported “missing” but has since been reported “killed”
Please give this matter your attention. I have the honour to be your obedient servant
