- Description
- There are two photographs in this record. The first one on view was taken at an earlier date than the second one which shows the back entrance to the brick Methodist Church on the 7th Line (Trafalgar Road), which was opened in 1915. Click on "Pages" "Select" at the top of the page to view the second photograph.
The following information is taken, in part, from the book, "Mrs. Merry's Memories" from a series of taped interviews by Lou Bradley, edited by Deborah Quaile, published by the Milton Historical Society, c2002.
The first Methodist church was a dual church/school wood frame building, erected across Seventh Line from the present day church property. It was replaced in 1848 by a wood frame building erected during the pastorate of Reverend Mr. Boyle.
Construction of this brick church started in 1914. There was no land around the new 1914/5 church for parking so cars would drive up the path clearly shown in the first photograph here, drop people off at the door, then back down to park on Trafalgar Road. The drive path marks still show in the lawn. - Notes
- The church is still located on the west side of 7th Line (Trafalgar Road) at Britannia Road, on a hill. Today (in 2011), the church is Bethel United Church in Hornby Pastoral Charge. It is located on the west side of 7th Line (6150 Trafalgar Road) at Britannia Road.
The cemetery, Pioneer Cemetery, is between the new brick church and the site of the previous wood frame church building. For further information on the cemetery, see the booklet by Jane Watt, Trafalgar Township Cemetery No. 5: Bethel United Church Cemetery, Drumquin, Ontario, Concession 7, Lot 7, Trafalgar Township, Halton County, Ontario, published by the Halton-Peel Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society; [Rev. ed.] edition (1997), 15 pp. - Inscriptions
