- Description
- The following information is found in the March 2007 issues of The Oakville Historical Society Newsletter, pages 7-8 - linked under the blue card on the right for more detailed information. The Newsletter will open as a PDF.
The Newsletter documents a number of owners of the south-west part of Lot 19 3rd Concession SDS or 491 Lakeshore Road West from William McCraney who sold it to Reverend George Washington in 1853. The Reverend built a single storey cottage "The Retreat" on the land.
In 1875, John Triller Howell obtained the land but as the Newsletter says, there is a date problem and he had already built a house on the property ca1859.
In 1877, the land was sold to George de Warrenne Greene. Then in 1885 to George Bunbury who actually had returned to England before the sale closed.
In 1900, it was purchased by Captain George Hardy Morden and later that year, given to his son Edward.
Both father and son were Great Lake Captains who owned the Morden Line of schooners and steamers which operated on the Great Lakes. - Notes

In December 1971, January 1972, Parks Canada photographed those buildings that were 100 or more years old. This Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings was a Centennial Project.
The Trafalgar Township Historical Society has worked with Parks Canada and Library and Archives Canada to find the photographs taken in the Trafalgar Township and Town of Oakville areas. The collection will grow as we prepare the images.
The TTHS has also shared the images with the Town of Oakville Heritage Planners to increase local availability and to ensure local preservation.
Each TTHS internet record shows the back of the identifying information card first. This is to prevent any errors in reading the handwritten address held up on a clipboard for each address - we have noted that sometimes the address number is illegible or incorrect.
All TTHS records in this collection can be found in one step by clicking on the "Groups" link on the right of your screen, "Parks Canada. Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings, 1970-1972. Trafalgar Township & Oakville." - Inscriptions
