- The Oceola Class was formed in 1928 by young women interested in the outdoors and camping. Members became very active in church work and local charities. See the Notes below here for information as to the meaning of "Oceola".
There is very little information about the group in local newspapers; a mention that they held their 60th anniversary in 1988, their 65th in 1993, that they met at St. John's United Church on Randall Street in Oakville, Ontario.
The internet yields only the information that the group was still active in 2006 with a donation to Ian Anderson House.

This wonderful photograph, taken in 1953 on the occasion of their 25th Re-Union by Oakville photographer, E. Hayden MacKintosh, shows how important the Oceola Class was to its members. 70 women are present. Everyone is dressed in their very best, special members wear corsages, Lila Hitchcox at the end of the second row sang a solo. Lucy Frank is identified as the baker who made the celebratory cake. - Notes
- Oceola, Osceola, or Asi-yahola, was a First Nations warrier, 1804-1838, son of a mixed-race Creek woman and white father. After a defeat in a Creek war in 1814, he and his mother migrated to Florida where they joined the Seminole people. Starting in 1821, U.S. government tried to move these people from Florida as white settlers encroached on Seminole territory, resulting in a number of wars fought. Oceola was respected as a Seminole warrier who was inspirational during these troubled times. He was finally tricked into being captured and died in prison.
"Rising Sun" is one English language translation of "Oceola". This is the Creek name given to the young man in adulthood, who had been named "Billy Powell" at birth. (The above information is from Wikipedia.) - Date Of Event
