Description
The old house is located on the north side of Burnhamthorpe Rd. West, west of Sixth Line, east of Neyegawa Boulevard. It is legally PT LT 17, CON 2 TRAFALGAR NDS, as ib 425564 ; TOWN OF OAKVILLE.

The Crown sold Lot 17 in 1828 to Kings College. The southern 100 acres were almost immediately sold to John Featherstone, one of the earliest Township of Trafalgar settlers.

John had been a miner in England and moved to Canada with wife Jane Hodgins in 1829. They began clearing their land in 1830.

Son John (junior) purchased the farm in 1865. He expanded his business by cutting and selling lumber with his saw mill on the north end of the property. According to the Laurie Smith Heritage Consulting Inventory Report linked in this record for further information, he used his own lumber to build a temporary house which was incorporated into the one-and-a-half storey Victorian Gothic style house on the property in about 1870.

Family members continued to work the farm. Grandson William E. Featherstone served as Mayor of Oakville 1914-1915.

The property is Listed on the Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value of Interest (NOT Designated).
