- This address is north of the QEW on the west side of Bronte Road across from Halton Region Paramedic Services Headquarters in the old Bronte village area of Merton. Parks Canada wrote the house number as 1216 A Bronte (with an accent on the "e") - presumably as informed by the occupant home at the time.
At the time of photographing, the owner was Ms. Flint. The original owner (or tenant) was Mr. Fairbrother. It was estimated that the house was built in 1845.
Other Fairbrother information in our internet collection mention Mrs. James Fairbrother who was a member of the Palermo Women's Institute, Albert Fairbrother who was a student in 1920 at S.S. 15, Merton. Throughout the 1940's, Mr. Fairbrother wrote a play every year for the schoolchildren which he directed. His wife made costumes. According to a 1958 newspaper clipping in our collection, "This annual production was a highlight of the school year and a lasting memory for those children who participated."
There are 4 photographs showing the facades of the house in this record. The 2nd shows the back with outhouse, 2 chimneys of which one looks like a fireplace chimney, decoration on the wooden screen doors and a ladder up for clearing snow from the roof. (I don't see a path through the snow to the outhouse so it's doubtful it was still in use.) This was a rural property on the east bank of Twelve Mile (Bronte) Creek.

- In December 1971, January 1972, Parks Canada photographed those buildings that were 100 or more years old. This Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings was a Centennial Project.
The Trafalgar Township Historical Society has worked with Parks Canada and Library and Archives Canada to find these photographs in the area of Trafalgar Township and the city of Oakville, Ontario. The collection will grow as we have time to collect and prepare the images.
The TTHS is also sending the images to the Town of Oakville Heritage Planners to increase local availability and to ensure local preservation.
