Description
A quick search of the newspapers archived in Halinet shows that rural routes needing a new postman had a notice placed in area newspapers by the Post Office Inspector's office in Toronto. The notice appears under the heading "Proclamation !". Linked to this record is a page from the January 2, 1918 The Georgetown Herald on which you can see examples of the notices. One for the contract in this record for the Bronte route via Merton, and two for Hornby's R.R. 1 and R.R. 2.

As per the contract, the mail was picked up from the G.T.R. (Grand Trunk Railway) train in Bronte, every day except Sunday. The route is detailed in "Inscriptions" below here. It went west to Bronte Creek, north to Dundas and came back south to the Bronte Post Office down Bronte Road, passing through the Merton area.

The advent of the car was a major catalyst of change to postal delivery and post offices in the 20th century.
Notes
Under the document in this record, is also a link to a 1958 map of Oakville with the delivery routes marked by hand.
