- Description
- Rose and Robert Shillum bought the 100 acre dairy farm on the Back Concession (now 3133 Burnhamthorpe Rd. West), Palermo, from Fred Edwards and moved their family from Toronto in 1950. There, on Rosemar Farms, they raised their three boys, Bob, Wayne and Brian. Robert Sr. was a sales representative for a paint company called Berry Brothers. His territory was Ontario. He continued this work even after purchasing the farm.
This photograph shows brothers Brian (on our left) and Wayne Shillum with Mrs. Taylor who was the boys babysitter in Toronto.
They are sitting on the hay wagon which was drawn by horses in the early 1950's. Wayne writes in his book (book information in "Notes" below here) that the average hay wagon platform might be 10 x 14 feet. The front rack was the highest and might be 8 feet high with cross members to hold in the hay and to stand on when driving the horses as the load grew. The rack at the back was slightly lower to allow the hay to enter the wagon from the hay loader. To collect the hay, a hay loader was attached to the back of the wagon, one person drove the team and two distributed the hay and build the load up to 6-8 feet above the wagon platform. The horses walked along, each on either side of a row of loose hay on the ground. The loader travelled above the loose hay and the loader picked it up, carried up on a conveyor chute to then fall into the wagon. - Notes
