Jonathan Book was Executor of the will. The Will was registered in the Surrogate Court by Judge Oliver Springer.
On the third page of the will, the last photograph in this record, Mr. Hopper directed that all his lawful debts be paid and that he be buried at Palermo with a suitable gravestone. He He left his "heir at law whensover he establishes legally his claim", five shillings. He bequeathed his effects to his faithful friend Jonathan Book of the Township of Trafalgar, as long as he could live with him. The will date was November 27, 1854. Witnesses were H.M. Private James Hopper served with other Halton County men in the 2nd Regiment of York Militia. In 1813, he was working on Dundas Street. As per the work of Fred Blair and the historical information on The Lorne Scots Regiment, we know that he fought at St. Davids and Burlington Heights in 1814.
James was also one of the local Trafalgar Township men who responded to the 1817 Gourlay report, "Statistical Account of Upper Canada".
We also know that in 1818 he was one of a trio of men who purchased land for the Palermo cemetery.
In the 1825 Trafalgar Township Assessment, he is shown as having one person in his family (himself) and having 40 acres of Lot 32 Concession 1 North under cultivation. The other 60 acres of his lot was not cultivated.
The document is owned by a descendent of his good friend and executor, Jonathan Johnson Book. Jonathan's parents were Jacob (1788–1863) and Mary (Moore) Book (1795–1846).
Jonathan's wife was Hannah Priscilla (Smith) Book ( 1814–1897).
Children of Jonathan and Hannah were: Martha Book Vansickle (1837–1906), Robert Ormi Book (1839–1898), Absalom Smith Book (1841–1919), James Burgess Book (1843–1916), Ettie L. Book (1848–1925).
