Description
The photograph in the main record was taken in 1981. The second photograph which can be seen by clicking on "Pages" "Select" was taken in 1991.

This house was built about 1900 on land owned by Abraham Phenix, Concession 1 Lot 8 SDS. This is just west of Ninth Line, south side of Dundas Street in Oakville.

The book by Robert Warnock, A Sketch of the County of Halton, Canada West, 1862 lists the occupants of Lot 8 Con 1 SDS as John F. Orr and Adam Phenix.

An Abraham (Abram, also written as Adam as in the book above) Phenix apparently had been born in Canada and settled on this land in 1815. His family had come into Canada through the Niagara area after the American revolution. The 1816 Trafalgar Township Assessment transcript by Fred Blair assisted by Jane Watt shows John Phenix as occupying Concession 1 Lot 8 SDS. Fred also notes that John was one of 47 men who appeared to have served in the 2nd Regiment of York Milita during the War of 1812. A link to this transcript is provided in this record for your information.

The family repeated the use of the name Abram in succeeding family generations so birth and death dates are significant identifiers.

A WikiTree on the internet spells the surname as Phoenix but current Halton area newspapers still have mention of Phenix family members today.

Census information for Trafalgar Township lists Abraham Phenix as age 35 in 1851, age 40 in 1861 and age 65 in 1881. He was a Wesleyan Methodist church member. This Abraham (Abram) is likely the father of the house builder - not withstanding the 1861 age which should have been 45 years old.

A number of the Phenix family are buried in the cemetery at Munn's Corners. Here is the list as of August 2016:
Phenix, Abram b. 1814 d. Oct. 1, 1886
Phenix, Emma Agnes b. unknown d. Sep. 10, 1855 - daughter of Margaret and Abram
Phenix, Huldah A b. Feb., 1861 d. Jun. 2, 1864 - daughter of Margaret and Abram
Phenix, James Austin b. unknown d. May 21, 1877
Phenix, John Read b. unknown d. 1862
Phenix, John William b. Nov. 27, 1843 d. Oct. 25, 1844 - son of Margaret and Abram
Phenix, Margaret b. unknown d. Feb. 26, 1864
Phenix, Margaret C Ryan b. 1822 d. Mar. 8, 1897 - spouse of Abram

His gravestone clearly says Abram Phenix was aged 72 when he died in 1886. Correlated with the census information which puts his birth date in 1816, he would have been age 76 if he died in 1886. The Milton Champion newspaper has the legal Notice to Creditors in connection with this death in the January 20, 1887 edition, page 3, Ebenezer Phenix is the estate administrator.

So, more correlation and verification of information is required for the Phenix family who built this house.
