- Description
- Taken at the family farm, 1053 Burnhamthorpe Road East, in about 1937 when Arnold Fish is about 18 years old. Arnold was renowned for his Holsteins, and was a member - indeed, he later held the office of President - of Halton Holstein Breeders. His obituary says he loved his Holsteins, Palominos and Belgians, as well as the farm.
The horse here isn't one of those breeds but it is in harness to a sulky. You can see that Arnold's legs are on either side, almost touching, the back legs of the horse. The sulky seat has Arnold and Barb quite low so likely, the driver normally sat back further on top of the seat with his feet braced on the horizontal bar running the length of the horse's body - braced where it curves inside the wheels down under the front of the seat.
The horse is a "light" horse with small feet, slimmer legs. A driving horse. - Subject(s)
