- Description
- This is the home in which Stanley and Ethel Wood raised their family in Palermo, Halton County, in the middle of the 20th century. The house still stands in early 2016, in fact it is for sale.
G.S. Wood and his wife, Ethel, owned the general store with post office on the northeast corner of Bronte Road and Hwy. 5 in Palermo, Trafalgar Township, during the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. (The intersection today is Old Bronte Road and Dundas Street in Oakville.) Ethel ran the Palermo telephone switchboard out of the store for the rural area. A link to a newspaper article showing her at the switchboard is provided for your further information.
The Palermo General Store was one of two at Palermo. Over the years, other proprieters and post masters/mistresses of this general store and post office besides Lawrence Hagar were James, Dobson, G.S. Wood, R.B. McGill, W.P. Sargent and Eva Nussey.
Active members of the community, Stan and Ethel were involved musicians. Stan sang in area music festivals and a newspaper clipping linked to this record shows Ethel as one of the junior choir leaders while their sons, Norman and Donald, are choir members.
There was a family farm just east of Bronte Road on Upper Middle Road. - Date Of Event
