- John Thomas Moulding, known as Jack, loved horses and although as a lad in England had no horses in his immediate family as his father worked in a mill, joined the stable of the Sir William Gerard family and took the opportunity to continue learning horsecraft as a soldier in the Boer War by joining the Lancashire Hussars Yeomanry Cavalry, the regiment founded by his employer's grandfather. He came to Trafalgar Township to manage the family stables of the Herbert Cox family in 1910. He served in The Great War as batman to Captain Kenneth Marlatt, Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. - The medals are firmly mounted on backing to make them easy to wear on parade so the verso of each could not be photographed. But a description and the inscriptions on each are described in writing. In 2016, a 1901 newspaper clipping from the St. Helens Reporter was shown to us, which described a ceremonial presentation of gold medals to 14 Aston-in-Makerfield members of the Lancashire Hussars - one was presented to J. Moulding. - The medals are described here, from left to right.
1. Front of medal: along the top is written, South African. Britannia holds the Union Flag and a laurel wreath. In the background are troops marching to the coast and also war ships. Attached to the medal top are the names of the battles in which Jack fought (and was wounded): Belfast, Laing's Nek, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Tugela Heights, Cape Colony. On the rim of the medal is engraved: 312 Pte. J. Moulding, Lancashire Hussars. On the medal back is inscribed: Victoria Regina ET Imperiatrix. The image is of Victoria. 2. The 1914-1915 Star medal was awarded to all who "saw service in any theatre of war against the central powers between 05 August 1914 and 31 December 1915 except those eligible for the 1914 Star."
3. Shows the profile of King George V, inscribed GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP. On the rim is inscribed, 109507 Pte J.T. Moulding.
4. This Victory medal is inscribed (not shown), "The Great War For Civilization 1914-1919" with Victory showing. On the rim is inscribed, "109507 Pte J.T. Moulding". - Subject(s)
