- Description
- The Halton Women's Institute compiled this cookbook in 1912 as a fund-raiser. The cover and 14 of the pages are included in this record to illustrate some of the advertising included, the names and contributions of women in Halton, and some of the pages with splotches and food bits which indicate favourite family recipes.
This book was found in the family memorabilia of the Smith family of John D. Smith and his descendents who farmed Lot 34, Conc. 1, SDS near Palermo. This cook book was likely used by Keturah Smith, wife of Walker Smith, John Durland Smith's son.
Keturah was 53 years old in 1912 and looking after the farm household for her husband and their two sons, Arthur and Russell who were 24 and 22 years old.
There is much of interest in this book. Please click on "Pages" in this record to see soup, pickle or cake recipes, the recipes for cleaning and lotions, and the ads for such local businesses as McGregor's Hardware in Oakville, Nixon's Hardware in Milton or the dry goods store of W. S. Woods in Palermo. It is also interesting to see the names of local women who contributed the recipes. - Notes
