- Description
- On June 19, 1929, the Wilson - Clark clan gathered at the residence of W. Alfred Wilson. Over 150 people gathered to celebrate the 1829 settlement of Christopher Wilson and his wife, Elizabeth Clark on the farm. They had emigrated from England with Christopher's father. Shortly after settling in Hammondville (sometimes written as "Hammondsville" in newspapers, for example), as it was then known, Christopher Wilson senior moved to the area of London, Ontario. The son and his wife remained at Sheridan, raising their two sons, John and Richard, and their daughters Hanna and Sarah. John later owned a farm on the Town Line (now Winston Churchill Blvd.) and Richard farmed the homestead. Hannah married Alex Cranston and Sarah married Steven Oughtred.
The Clarks had come from England 99 years ago. Joseph and Hannah settled on the farm across the road from Christopher and their sister, Elizabeth. They had 3 sons, Joseph, Willam and John. Their daughters married Charles Shain, G.W. Munn and John Sproule.
This information is taken from several sources including an article about the reunion that appeared in The Oakville Star and Independent newspaper, May 10, 1929 (linked here to the full text in the Halton Newspapers digital collection). A second newspaper article on June 21, 1929 ends, "A feature of the evening was that Hydro juice had been turned on for the Wilson residence and other neighbours during the day and was used for the evening garden party." (This June 21 newspaper issue is not available via the internet.) - Notes
