Description
This postcard was published for Bronte postmaster, J.S. Flumerfelt, for sale from the post office. The photograph shows the smokestack of the Bronte Steam Mills, a gristmill, built in 1858 and visible as a landmark from the water for almost 100 years, on the left, the lighthouse on the east side of the land spit into Lake Ontario, and on the right a steamer, fishing shacks and derricks show the entrance to the inner harbour.

For more information on the struggle to obtain money and work permits to dredge the harbour in the 1840's and the changes this brought to the marshland along the Twelve Mile Creek, please click on the link to the Town of Oakville's Bronte Harbour website.

See Also the published book, The Story of Bronte by Philip Brimacombe, Oakville Historical Society & Boston Mills Press, c1976. This book has an excellent map showing the location of Bronte village roads, structures and other topographical information - some still in place, others long gone.
Notes
The cancelled stamp on this card is a 2 cent, of King Edward VII wearing the Ermine Robes of State. King Edward died in 1910 and it wasn't until 1911 that the new series of stamps with King George V were issued.

The first lighthouse was knocked over in a memorable storm of 1888 in which, according to the Brimacombe book, "east wind blew at 60 m.p.h. for 3 days, wiping out all piers between the Credit and Burlington - build by Lem Dorland 1890's) and was replaced in 1900.
