Description
Norman Evans, born in England, was orphaned and sent with his younger brother, William Gordon Evans, to the Independent Order of Foresters orphanage at 53 Bond Street, Oakville in late 1911. Their great nephew is Mr. Andrew McBain of Cheshire, UK who contacted the Trafalgar Township Historical Society in 2008. Mr. McBain believes they are also in the Oakville Highschool pictures of 1911-1916.
Notes
The Independent Order of Foresters or I.O.F. orphanage was built in 1910 at 53 Bond Street, Oakville. In 1943, the army rented it as a re-training centre for soldiers, and in 1944 the main building became the Women's Service Health Centre and it served as a hospital until its closure in 1946. Today, in 2011, the facility is Central West Specialized Developmental Services with an emphasis on community based services.
