From around 1946 to 1949 we lived about one mile east of the stores. Our little shack of a house was located on the north side of the Dundas Highway next to Charlie Pickering's property.
Occasionally, in nice weather, 2 or 3 of us Barber clan would beg a couple of pennies each from our parents and head toward Dent's or Bradley's stores. On our way we would excitedly look for pop bottles in the ditch (worth 2 cents each) as we made our way to the store. Usually, we took our "loot" to Dents to see what goodies he had in his glass display case.
I remember coming out with a prized bag of several assorted penny candies. I sure liked those caramels! Two for a penny!! Of course there was nothing left in that little bag by the time we got home!
Great memories!!!
PS. I still like a bargain to this day...just ask my daughters!!!
