Description
The first image in this record is the scan of a newspaper clipping from a scrapbook made by Miss Lizzie McGowan and donated by the Biggar family to the Trafalgar Township Historical Society. There is no date nor is the newspaper cited, but the item is of interest because it concerns the silver wedding anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Hager of Palermo.

Mary and Laurence married in Palermo, Trafalgar Township on June 10, 1891. Their silver annniversary, or their 25th wedding anniversary was on June 10, 1916. They eventually celebrated 49 years of marriage.

The second image is of Mary and Laurence at their home in Palermo, called "Ladysmith", perhaps at the time of their silver anniversary.
Notes
Early land registry records and Trafalgar census records from 1851, 1871, 1881 use the family surname spelling, "Hagar". However, the 1861 census and the family gravestones in the Palermo cemetery use the spelling "Hager". Discussion with family in 2016 shows that most family members use the spelling "Hager" with the exception of one descendent group who preferred the other. During our discussion, we also found records with the following spellings - likely as interpreted from the new immigrants by Customs officials - Hauger, Hegi, Hauge.

The family also interchanged the spelling of "Lawrence" with "Laurence" and since a number of family men used this name over several generations, please check under both spellings. In this online collection, it is the Trafalgar Township Historical Society that has added the "III" or "Second" to the names of family "Laurence Hager" men, solely to distinguish between them.
