- William Lyon Mackenzie was sheltered and hidden by the family of Absalom Smith of Palermo, Trafalgar Township on his historic flight from Upper Canada after his defeat at the skirmish at Montgomery's Tavern, York (now Toronto), December 1837. According to the family, the empty chair with blanket and candle were all used by the rebel leader. (Mackenzie was soaked in the icy water of the Sixteen Mile Creek when he arrived at the house. After falling in the water, he and his companion, Allan Wilcox, stayed in hiding until visitors at the house had departed so he was thoroughly chilled.) Family lore says that Anna Mary (Beamer) Smith gave him a newly made dry shirt and his wet one was left behind.

The next person is Charles Prudham, husband of Annie Prudham. On the right side of the photo from left to right are: Margaret (Scouton) Pickett, Charlton Harold Pickett, Eva Leona(Pickett) Slater. The lady standing immediately behind Ella Pickett, to the left of Charles Prudham is Nettie (Pickett) Armstrong, sister of Anna Catherine (Pickett) Prudham.
Anna Catherine Smith, daughter of Absalom Smith and Anna Mary Beamer, married Thomas E. Pickett, son of Rev. Daniel Pickett and Elizabeth Franz Ingersoll, sister of Laura Secord. They lived in Lowville, the Reverend Daniel Pickett and family settling there in 1820. - Date Of Event
