- Étretat is a small seaside town flanked by dramatic chalk cliffs about 26 kilometres north of Le Havre on the Upper Normandy coast. It was the location of a British General Base Hospital for five years during World War I.
The seaside L’Hotel des Roches Blanches was converted to this 1,000-bed hospital. It was part of the casualty evacuation chain away from the front line. The site was chosen due to the town’s local railway, where casualties could be brought from the Western Front, and for the easy access to the English Channel where hospital ships took patients needing longer-term treatment to England.
In December 1914, the British No. 1 General Hospital was established in Étretat and it remained there until December 1918 even though it was taken over by the American Base Hospital No. 2 (Presbyterian Unit, from the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City) in July 1917. The nursing staff consisted of 65.
