- Notes
- In this interview, Frank Waywell talks about his involvement in the war effort before, during and after World War II. Frank first started in the Royal Army Medical Corps but then felt compelled to join the air force once he saw the severity of the war. He talks about his training all over the United Kingdom and how he set out on a boat to South Africa three weeks after marrying his wife. He also describes moving planes and ground crew across the desert and some of the challenges he encountered. Prior to the end of the war, Frank was taken hostage by the Germans and after spending time in a prison camp outside of Naples in Italy, he was moved to Stalag Four between Leipzig and Dresden. Following his escape from the prison camp and then end of the war, Frank and his wife moved to Canada because they felt if would provide better opportunities for their children.
