When a properly fitted mouthguard is worn it helps provide protection for the hard areas like teeth and jaw as well as soft tissues including lips, cheeks, tongue and gums. A quality mouthguard provides protection by absorbing and redistributing the forces [Y generated by traumatic blows that are common in many sports. “I recommend wearing a custom-made when playing any type of sport where contact is involved,” says Dr. Vineet Bhandari whose Oakville clinic offers professionally fitted mouth protectors. Regarded as the most protective and comfortable type of guard, athletes are more likely to wear their custom-fitted mouthguard. Custom guards are designed for the individual and are a perfect fit, making it possible for athletes to speak quite clearly while the wearing the mouthguard. The “boil and bite” mouthguards available from retailers are not recommended as they do not fit properly, explains Dr. Bhandari. “Over-the-counter mouthguards move around in the mouth and athletes must clench their teeth together to keep it in. Generic mouthguards provide minimal protection. Often you will see athletes with the guard half-in and half-out of their mouth,” says the local dental professional. It is imperative that a custom- boxing, hockey, lacrosse, rugby, basketball, water polo, martial soccer, arts and wrestling. Athletes in sports such as, skateboarding, baseball, racquetball, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics and skiing are also at risk for injury and wearing a mouthguard is highly recommended as part of the athlete’s protective equipment.
