Residents can now ride Oakville Transit for free when connecting to GO Transit bus or train servic- es. The province an- nounced that as of Monday, March 14, it is eliminating the local transit fare for most transit agencies, in- cluding in Oakville, when residents use a PRESTO card to transfer to/from GO Transit bus or train services. A valid paper single- ride ticket and day pass GO tickets will also be accept- ed as proof of payment to receive the discount. "Council is committed to making it quick, simple and hassle-free to get to, from and around Oak- ville, and to providing eas- ier and more efficient al- ternatives to single-occu- pant automobile use," said Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton. "This co-fare agreement aligns with Oakville's top priorities for a more livable future." The Town of Oakville is currently providing free transit service to all cus- tomers until the end of March following the recent union strike by Oakville Transit drivers and main- tenance workers. Town staff said that af- ter March 31, Oakville Transit will continue to be free for customers connect- ing to and from GO Transit service. For example, if you take an Oakville Transit bus to or from the Bronte GO sta- tion, the fare you pay for your Oakville Transit trip will automatically be reim- bursed in full onto your PRESTO card when you tap on GO Transit. Town staff said this provincial initiative means that anyone who commutes back and forth using Oakville Transit and GO Transit five days a week could save $400 an- nually on local transit ex- penses. "This is excellent news for transit customers and for those who are tired of trying to find parking space at the GO station," said Phoebe Fu, the town's commissioner of commu- nity infrastructure. OAKVILLE TRANSIT OFFERING FREE CONNECTION RIDES DAVID LEA dlea@metroland.com NEWS The province has launched an initiative where residents can ride Oakville Transit for free if they connect with GO Transit. Graham Paine/Metroland The Town of Oakville is hosting a virtual Coyote In- formation Session on Thursday, March 31. The session, which be- gins at 6 p.m., will provide residents with facts about urban coyotes, an- swer residents' ques- tions, and provide tips on how to respond to coyote sightings. The meeting will fea- ture Town staff, a repre- sentative from the Oak- ville & Milton Humane So- ciety and a representative from Coyote Watch Cana- da. Town staff point out that coyotes are found in every urban centre in North America and so see- ing one on a town road or sidewalk is not uncom- mon. They also said that while coyotes are not con- sidered a significant risk to people, there are steps that can be taken to avoid con- flicts with coyotes. Residents are asked to pre-register for the virtu- al meeting at https:// us06web.zoom.us/webi- nar/register/ WN_T396_fBySrWxj- hoNwd8n2Q. To follow along without participating, watch a live stream of the meeting on YouTube. Those with questions can submit them ahead of the meeting by emailing enforcement@oakville.ca. Additional information about coyotes can be found at https://www.oak- ville.ca/environment/fea- tured-wildlife.html. TOWN TO HOLD COYOTE INFO SESSION
