Since Canada won Olympic gold in women's hockey in 2014, it had met the U.S. seven times in the final of an internationalfinal of an internationalf tournament. Seven times the Americans won. Four times in overtime. Once, in the gold medal game at the 2018 Olympics, in a shoo- tout. With such a razor-thin margin between the two teams, it seemed implausi- ble the toss of the coin could keep coming up with the same result. Maybe the hockey gods were collect- ing a debt for that fateful goalpost that preceded Canada's comeback and overtime win in Sochi. It reached a breaking point at the 2019 worlds, when the anticipated Can- ada-U. S. final didn't even happen after Finland shocked Canada in the semifinals. It was what teammate Renata Fast called "hitting rock bottom as a program." To make matters worse, the Canadians had to sit on that result for more than two years after COVID-19 forced the cancellation offorced the cancellation off two world championships. "It's been a tough road the last several years," said Jenner, a 30-year-old Oak- ville native and longtime national team member. But the break may have been just what Canada needed. Rather than focus- ing on the U.S., Canada fo- cused on itself. "We've worked with a mental performance coach, working on what mindset we want to have," said Jenner, who is playing in her third Olympics in Beijing. "We know there is going to be adversity. If the calls don't go our way, don't let it get to you." Those lessons paid off at the worlds in August. After beating the Americans 5-1 in the round robin, the ad- versity arrived. Canada fell behind the U.S. 2-0 infell behind the U.S. 2-0 inf the gold-medal game. But Jenner scored to pull Can- ada within one and set up Jamie Lee Rattray's tying goal and Marie-Philip Pou- lin's overtime winner. Jenner said the current Olympic team has a perfect mix of youth and veterans. And even though the team was separated into differ- ent training groups across the country until they cen- tralized just prior to the world championship, Jen- ner said they found ways to remain a united group. "Everyone has bought in. The way we came out and played the style of hockey we wanted to play, there was a new presence," Jenner said. "There's no reason not to be confi- dent." Brianne Jenner said the Canadian women's hockey team has the perfect mix of veterans and youth.
