Here's what you need to know about the event. 1. The free virtual cele- bration will be held on Aug.1 between 5 and 7 p.m. 2. Special guests will in- clude historians, govern- ment representatives, community leaders and entertainers, a number of whom are descendants of enslaved peoples. 3. The event will also feature freedom/equality activists who will speak about racism and promote cultural knowledge, inclu- sive integration and au- thentic equality. 4. The presentation will celebrate, through stories and music, the British Emancipation Act of 1834 when the British govern- ment abolished slavery in its colonies. 5. The August 1 celebra- tion will also mark the first year of Emancipation Day being officially recognized across Canada after a unanimous vote by federal MPs in March of 2021 and Burlington being the first city in the world to acclaim August as Emancipation Month. 6. The HBHAS is part- nering with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton to host an Emanci- pation Day drive-thru BBQ where 200 free meals will be offered. 7. Participants are re- quired to pre-order meals through https:// bit.ly/3B0F5DI and meals can be picked up on Sun- day, Aug. 1 between 3-5 p.m. at the Queen Eliza- beth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd. 8.
