June is Seniors Month in Ontario and this year's theme is "stay safe, active and connect- ed". Established 37 years ago, Seniors Month is a time to recognize older adults and the contributions they've made in communities across Ontario. "We're focusing on programs and services that enable seniors to remain safe, healthy, engaged and live life to the fullest during the COVID-19 outbreak and beyond," states the Province of Ontario's promotion of the annual celebration. The Province's website www.ontario.ca fea- tures information about programs that are available to serve seniors in their community. The Ontario Community Support Program refers isolated seniors and people with dis- abilities to local Meals on Wheels providers and other community service agencies. If you can't register online or if you require service in a language other than English or French, call 211 on any phone or call toll free 1-888- 340-1001. Find social, non-clinical health and relat- ed government services with a call to 211 Ontario. Seniors who are experiencing any kind of neglect or abuse can call the Seniors Safety Line at 1-866-299-1011 for free, con- fidential and free information, referrals and support in more than 200 languages 24/7. The Province offers many programs for seniors including free routine dental services for low-income seniors over age 65 through the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program. Seniors with a valid Ontario health card have access to prescription drug assistance and Health Care Connect helps seniors find a doctor or nurse practitioner. Those in need of assistive devices can apply to the province's assistive devices program. For free mental health and addiction sup- port seniors can contact ConnexOntario for information and referrals by calling 1-866- 531-2600. COVID-19 has underlined the value of vac- cines for protection from serious preventable diseases. Ontario offers a number of free vac- cines for adults including COVID-19, tetanus and diphtheria, annual flu shot, pneumococ- cal at age 65 and shingles between ages 65 and 70. Physical activity is another factor in good health and adults ages 65 and over should log 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Find physical activity tips at canada.ca and check out the guidelines, tips and videos from ParticiPACTION geared to seniors at participa- tion.com. Staying mentally and socially engaged is also key to good overall health along with a healthy diet and a good night's sleep. Canada's Food Guide is a go to reference for healthy eating. A Friendly Voice is a free, con- fidential phone line for Ontarians 55+ who just want to chat with a friendly person. Call toll-free 1-855-892-9992 between 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Get help with sleep issues from Sleep on it Canada (www.sleeponitcanada.ca). Seniors can make their homes safer by taking steps to prevent falling. The federal government has several guides online includ- ing "The Safe Living Guide" at www.canada.ca. The theme of Seniors Month is a reminder to address personal health and safety and seek the resources that can help.
