Morden, we do not tolerate racism and hate. It is an incorrect mind- set, and thus, we are com- mitted to eliminating it from the world, starting with our school. Our community is meant to be a safe space for everyone, no matter your skin colour or eth- nicity. Racism lurks below the surface in Canadian soci- ety and has for a long time. Racism in the gov- ernment has occurred throughout history in many forms, such as the Chinese head tax, resi- dential schools and our past with slavery and seg- regation. We acknowledge these past mistakes surround- ing racialized and Indige- nous communities, and we vow to continue em- powering those who have been oppressed. Regarding the topic of racism, we recognize that our society has come a long way, but we still have plenty of room to grow. The pandemic has opened our eyes to pro- found issues that have been negatively affecting our society. For example, police brutality against people of colour or the Asian hate crimes related to COVID-19. Recently, the world has seen an influx in protests and demands surround- ing Asian hate. This is a form of racism that is fre- quently overlooked, but that doesn't mean it should receive any less at- tention for it is just as harmful as all other forms of racism. One key step toward dismantling racism is confronting the uncon- scious bias that is embed- ded deep within the core of our society. We need to bring attention to the hid- den injustices of our sys- tem that benefit some and hinder others purely based on their race or the colour of their skin. As a society, we have to take action and right our previous wrongs to en- sure that our growing community is equitable. Discrimination and harmful language has no place in our school. Even if you say something that you may not think is a big deal, your words can have a huge impact on the peo- ple around you. Please take the time to educate yourself on the meaning and history be- hind what you are saying. Any racist language will be dealt with by informing the teacher or principal, and the student in ques- tion will be disciplined and educated according to the Discriminatory and Harmful Language Proto- col. We must take into con- sideration the thoughts and feelings of the people around us. We work hard to make sure that people of any culture or ethnicity do not feel discriminated against or unsafe in our or any environment. Some people might think that racism is noth- ing but a thing of the past, but they live blind to the truth of the world because racism is still prevalent to this day. Whether it be quietly assuming something about a person just be- cause of their appearance or blatantly voicing your negative opinions, they both imply the same hurt- ful message; a message that has no place here or anywhere. We do not tolerate any- one performing such ac- tions in our school. Just because you don't witness racism in your day-to-day life does not mean it doesn't exist. At the end of the day, we must remember that we are all human. Our school community will work together to rid the world of discrimination, by educating one student at a time.
