WANTED 20 PEOPLE WANTEDFOR A FREE HEARINGAID TRIAL The Ontario govern- ment is making significant strides for long-term care. The government is com- mitted to improving the quality of care and expand- ing the number of beds in our province. Major investments have been made over the last few months. The pandemic has been particularly hard on the residents in long-term- care homes. To improve the situation, the government provided hundreds of mil- lions in relief for residents and staff. Specifically, at the onset, an initial $243- million fund was created. Following this, in the fall preparedness plan, al- most $540 million is being invested to protect resi- dents, caregivers, and staff from future waves of CO- VID-19. This funding is crit- ical to help homes with op- erating, training staff, sup- porting staffing levels, among other important us- es. Furthermore, in 2019, the province committed $72 million more to long- term-care than the previ- ous year, and in the 2020 Economic Update, an addi- tional $80 million. Alongside investments, the government recently announced that the stan- dards of care would be en- hanced. The hours of direct care for each resident will be increased to an average of four hours per day. Targets will be set and reported on regularly. Moreover, to achieve this goal, the province will cre- ate thousands of jobs by re- cruiting nurses and per- sonal support workers. Reducing the growing wait list for long-term-care is a primary aim for the government. This past summer, the province an- nounced $1.75 billion over the next five years for long- term-care projects. Numerous projects to build homes have been in- troduced. Locally, a great announcement will see two 256-bed long-term-care homes, a total of 512 beds, constructed here in Oak- ville.
