The Ontario government has ap- proved funding for a bridge over Bronte Creek, connecting Wyecroft Road in Bur- lington to the road by the same name in Oakville. Regional council approved the road extension and bridge in July, planning to use $57.6 million from the Move Ontario Quick Wins Fund. On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the province committed to providing the funding. Halton regional chair Gary Carr said the project - just south of the QEW - would increase local residents' mobility. Currently, traffic on Wyecroft Road must go north to the highway or south through residential neighbourhoods. "I would like to thank the provincial government for this investment in infra- structure that will allow residents, busi- nesses, cyclists, transit users, pedestri- ans, first responders and motorists to ex- perience an immediate benefit from a multi-modal connective corridor," he wrote in a news release. The region says benefits of the bridge and extended roadway include relieving congestion on existing routes, helping commuters get to Appleby and Bronte GO stations more quickly, improving the bus network between the GO stations, connecting nearby employment lands, and providing new bicycle and pedestri- an infrastructure. "This much-needed project will bridge our communities of Oakville and Burlington, providing greater access and transportation options for our resi- dents, and helping reduce congestion on the QEW by providing additional east- west connections," stated Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward. "The Wyecroft Road Extension is a demonstration of partnership between the provincial government, Halton Re- gion, the City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "This is a true commitment to make the movement of people and goods with- in the region more effective and effi- cient."
