At 93, Harry had lived an incredibly full life, relishing his roles as a loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle; distinguished World War II Veteran; plumber and all-around handyman; celebrated former mayor of Oakville; and lifelong protector of public space and municipal heritage. Harry was born in the upstairs bedroom of h i s parents ' modest home on Trafalgar Road and left us a few kilometers away in the house that he built with his beloved wife Jackie. Although he fought overseas and traveled the world, Harry's greatest accomplishments were in his hometown. While serving as the chairman of the Oakville Planning Board in the 1960s and as the 42nd mayor of Oakville from 1973 to 1985, Harry instituted a town policy to buy up parkland for public use. In the early 1980s, he helped found the Old Oakville Heritage Conservation District and was a proud member of the Oakville Historical Society and the Oakville Heritage Committee. In 2012 the town honored his civic leadership by creating the Harry Barrett Waterfront Parks System and in 2016 he was awarded a Lieutenant Governor's Award by the National Trust for Canada. Harry is survived by his daughters Carol and Laurie, his grandsons Chris and Dan, his niece Anne, his great-nephew Ben, his great- niece Amy, and his great-great niece Michaela. He was predeceased by his wife Jackie, his brother Jack, and his sister-in-law Emma, and his son-in-law Roger. Visitation was held at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block East of Kerr Street) from 1-4 P.M. on Sunday, December 2nd. The funeral service was held at 1 P.M. on Monday, December 3rd at St. John's United Church, 262 Randall St., Oakville. GOODALE, Clifford Passed peacefully in his sleep on November 27, 2018. Leaving behind his beloved wife Marty Goodale of 52 years, and son Gord Goodale. He founded and operated his own general contractor's business for over 30 years. Bill was a devoted member of his church and served his community on both Municipal and Regional Councils. Post retirement he worked with other volunteers building churches for the Inuit as part of Operation Beaver. Summers at their cottage in Muskoka were a major part of family life. He enjoyed wilderness canoeing, ski trips to The Townships as well as golf, well into his nineties. With the assistance of his neighbours and others in the community, he lived in his home until his passing. Fortunate enough to still ride his bicycle and tend to his roses.
