The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee recipient was born in Guyana and trained as a registered nurse and midwife in Eng- land before moving to Can- ada in 1968. Her family noted that after Tyrrell relocated to Ontario in 1984 she became instrumental in pioneer- ing midwifery as a recog- nized profession. Tyrrell supported many local community and political organiza- tions including serving on the Halton Multicultural Council and partnering with Community Develop- ment Halton. Those who knew her said she used her involve- ment in the community and politics as a way to bring people together to push for inclusivity, toler- ance, social change and working toward the great- er good. Tyrrell is also credited with building the CCAH into what it is today. The nonprofit cultural organization has served the Halton community for more than 40 years. Tyrrell spoke about the organization during one of its anniversary events. "We combine arts, cul- ture and heritage program activities to advance the community's knowledge of diverse cultures and strengthen appreciation of all cultures that make up the diversity of Oakville and Halton," she said. Tyrrell was also a champion in the celebra- tion of black history in Oakville and through the CCAH would host events to kick off Black History Month and expand the community's knowledge of local black history. She also worked toward the preservation, under- standing and enjoyment of the Caribbean culture and performing arts while as- sisting new citizens from the Caribbean settle in Canada. CCAH spokesperson Richard Pinnock said Tyr- rell strongly advocated for the engagement of youth, particularly disadvan- taged kids, and believed in the importance of giving everyone the opportunity to reach their full poten- tial. "She was very adamant that we engage the youth and let them know about their roots and that they should be proud of the fact their background includes creating music and art and so on. Many kids don't have that kind of grasp on their background," said Pinnock.
