"I had a chance to visit some of the organizations that received this funding, and I have been incredibly impressed at the variety of experience and the types of jobs and roles you have been filling in these organizations," said Oli- ver. "We have students working at summer camps, churches, rehabil- itation programs, small businesses, charities and nonprofits." Several students and employers talked about their experiences with the CSJ program. Alexa Jones, who stud- ies at Guelph University, served as an assistant to the registered veterinary technician at the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. "When you're looking to gain practical experi- ence in your future career field, it can be difficultfield, it can be difficultf when you're still a stu- dent, as employers look to hire those who have fin- ished their schooling," she said. "With the summer job program, I found a job working with experienced people in my future field, and from them I have learned such valuable skills for my career path, and I couldn't be more grateful." McMaster University student Alysa Hyder got a summer job as a public education assistant with the Sexual Assault & Vio- lence Intervention Servic- es (SAVIS) of Halton. "Canada Summer Jobs gave me the incredible op- portunity to work for SA- VIS of Halton; a not-for- profit supporting survi- vors of violence," said Hy- der. "Being able to support an organization like this, while gaining valuable skills, has made this sum- mer my most fruitful yet. I have no doubt what I've learned here will aid me in my future as I continue into my master's degree." Andrea Barker, man- ager of animal care with the Oakville & Milton Hu- mane Society said her or- ganization is better for having participated in the CSJ program. "Summer is the busiest time of year for us, so hav- ing a summer student to help with the workload is invaluable," said Barker. "Having someone with some basic skills in our field already makes it afield already makes it af much easier experience for both us and her, andfor both us and her, andf we hope that her time with us gives her skills that she can carry with her throughout her ca- reer."
