The church, at 1150 Dun- das St. W., was originally built in 1845 by the Presbyte- rians of Trafalgar, however, according to Rev. Patrick Gushue, the congregation actually started meeting in people's homes and a local schoolhouse in the 1820s. When the church was built, Gushue says, the area was home to a village known as Proudfoot's Hollow, which also featured a grist mill, saw mill, blacksmith shop and distillery. The house of worship was enlarged and bricked over in 1899, and electric lights were installed in 1943. It was further expanded in 1994, with a basement dug beneath the original struc- ture to give the church much-needed room for Sun- day school classes, church meetings, a kitchen and washrooms. Gushue, who has served as the church's minister for the past three years, says the original wood church is still present within building. He said the church cur- rently has a congregation of 65 people who measure the time they have been attend- ing in decades. "It's a small church, and there are wonderful things about small churches that get lost in big churches," said Gushue. "Fundamentally, I be- lieve church is about com- munity, and community is about relationships. So when you have a smaller group of people you are real- ly able to care about each other, know each other by name and pray for one an- other when things aren't go- ing well."
