Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and seven of Oakville's 12 coun- cillors announced Thursday, Aug. 16 in front of the new Hal- ton police headquarters that is slated to open this fall that they would vote for Premier Doug Ford's one-time-only opt-out op- tion, which allows municipali- ties to excuse themselves from the province's plan to permit lo- cal retail cannabis stores. Recreational cannabis is cur- rently scheduled for legaliza- tion in Canada on Oct. 17. The province has announced private stores retailing canna- bis will be able to open by April. Burton noted the province's rules state the opt-out window will not be open until the new term of council, which he argues makes it an issue for the coming municipal election. "Voters will want to know how candidates stand now on this opt-out issue," said Burton. "We are here today as incum- bents to give our positions. Some of us are running to be the next council.
