Sore: Feet The Town of Oakville has unveiled new apps aimed at making it easier for those with cognitive special needs to use public transit and en- joy their local library. Oakville Transit and the Oakville Public Library re- cently teamed up with the ac- cessibility venture Magnus- mode to design free Magnus- Cards apps, which combines step-by-step guidance with game design to give users in- formation they need to makeformation they need to makef use of these public services. Organizers said the downloadable Magnus- Cards card decks specific to Oakville Transit will teach those with autism or other cognitive special needs about paying fares and using the Presto system; riding the bus; planning a trip, trans- ferring and getting help andferring and getting help andf staying safe. The Oakville Transit app is under the MagnusCards travel section. "There are people in the community who may not have the skills to navigate conventional transit alone yet or they require a bit more information and guidance on how to use the system. That lack of knowledge or anxiety around how to use the system is maybe imped- ing their ability to get around town," said Joanne Phoenix, manager of plan- ning and accessible services with Oakville Transit. "This is the tool that is there for them. It also pro- vides learning tools for those parents and guardians to as- sist their child or friend on how to use transit ... Once they are more comfortable and confident using public transit they can use it to ex- pand their opportunities in the community." The MagnusCards app for the Oakville Public Li-for the Oakville Public Li-f brary is likewise intended to promote accessibility to the library for everyone in the community. "We have a card deck that explains what to expect at the library. That you may see children, you may see people studying quietly. It tells you how to use the space, how to move in the space, what we offer - so our books, our DVDs, our digital resources,"DVDs, our digital resources,"D said Emily Burns, collection and content librarian for the Oakville Public Library. "We have specific instruc- tions on how to check out an item with our kiosk or how to return an item because we have an automated return sys- tem. It also lets you know how you can ask for help at the li-you can ask for help at the li-y brary, how to get a library card and what to expect." Burns hopes the Magnus- Cards app will make the li- brary a more welcoming and easy to understand space. The idea of the app was well received by Bryan Rios of Community Living Oak- ville who attended an open house event on the apps, which took place at Iroquois Ridge Library Wednesday, Aug. 1. "I think the Magnus- Cards app is going to be a great app for people with dis- abilities around the commu- nity that will help them navi- gate and feel confident in taking transit in Oakville," he said. "I think this is a great idea and the fact they are holding this open house to get feed- back shows they are willing to work with people in this community to get this right."
