Derek Logan photo COMMUNITYOPINION RE: Retired nurse thankful that today abor- tions are legal and safe, In- sideHalton, June 27 Thank you, Nancy, for your perspective on abor- tion. I am writing as a mid- dle-aged nurse, a mother of two children, a Roman Catholic Christian and as a human being who be- lieves in human rights for all. Growing up, I never truly identified myself as a "pro-life" supporter. I bought into the ideas that women had a right to pro- tect their own bodies. I was somewhat conflicted when it came to the beliefs of the Catholic Church versus the view of pro- gressive women and, more and more, society in gen- eral. After experiencing two pregnancies and two births, I witnessed the miracle of life as I held my children in my arms. It's then that I fully under- stood what the pro-life movement truly means. On the other end of the spectrum, as I held my fa- ther's hand and as he took his last breath, I saw the peaceful transition from life to natural death occur. I can, with 100 per cent cer- tainty, say that he was at peace. It was one of the hard- est yet most beautiful ex- periences in my life. I believe life is truly a gift that is given to us from up above. There is no oth- er possible explanation of how something so perfect can enter into this world. So, what gives us the right to choose death? Nancy, your letter doesn't mention the word "death" or "killing" - but, in my view, that is what abortion is. Where do you draw the line? I can only imagine what it must be like for a young person to be faced with an unwanted pregnancy. There are so many op- tions available for these unborn children. There are amazing or- ganizations out there that support women and girls through their pregnan- cies, births and mother- hood. They include Rose of Sharon, Birthright and Sisters of Life. There are also count- less couples who would love to adopt a child. I think that it is impor- tant for women and girls to consider all of their op- tions. Remember, there are options and there is hope. KATIE JEDLINSKI, RN, BSCN, BSC ED READER OFFERS ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE ON ABORTION
