Relay for Life is an an- nual fundraiser by the Ca- nadian Cancer Society to help raise money for can- cer research, and to ho- nour both cancer survi- vors, and those who have passed. Kim Friday is an Oak- ville resident who has been participating in Relay for Life for 17 years. Although Friday has never had can- cer herself, something brings her back to the event year after year. "Right at the very begin- ning of the walk they have survivors, and that was re- ally an impactful moment for me. Seeing all the peo- ple. There were children, men, women, young and old," Friday explained. "The thing I look forward to every year is seeing the survivors do the survivor lap, I would say that's what keeps me going." Relay for Life runs all night with teams walking around a track to raise money based on pledges. Friday's team has had a lot of success in the past, rais- ing around $5,000 per year, and over $70,000 in the past 17 years. Almost one in two Cana- dians will be diagnosed with cancer in their life- time. The odds are daunt- ing to Friday and are all the motivation she needs to continue raising money for cancer research. "Because I don't have (cancer), but I know so many people, so many co- workers, so many friends and their parents that have it, that's what really im- pacts me a lot," Friday said. With the event running all night, there are always different things to do. There are activities, bands, walking around the track and getting to cheer on sur- vivors. Friday explains that she looks forward to the event every year to give back to the community by fund- raising for local charities and cancer research. This year's Relay for Life is on June 1 at Oak- ville's Bronte Creek Pro- vincial Park from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Teams can register online by either joining an already existing team, or staring a new one.
