WEST, OAKVILLE Oakville South Candidates trade harts By Diane Hart SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER With less than a week to go before the provincial election, voters were treated to a spirited debate between feisty Oakville South candidates, Thursday evening, at Queen Elizabeth High School. At one point in the two-and- a-half hour meeting, moderator Ian Croskell told the audience he did not want to hear any more heckling from them. Property taxes and health care came in for their share of the barbs, as the four candidates tried to take advantage of their last public meeting before the votes are cast on election day, June 8th. Candidates in Oakville South are incumbent Gary Carr (PC); Lou Rocca (Liberal); Willie Lambert (NDP); and Mike Rooney (Family Coalition Party). The Federation of Oakville Residents (FORG), anxious about the prospect of a doubling of property taxes as of Jan. 1st, 1996, should MVA tax system be introduced, sponsored the evening on tax reform. John Hogg gave a brief history of the Oakville-based committee co chaired by himself and regional councillor, Kevin Flynn, before outlining the advantages of another tax system based on unit-value. The local committee has pressed the government for a study of the UVA tax system. For much of the early part of the evening, it was a no-holds barred sparring match between the two main contenders of the evening - Rocca and Carr. Although there were small jabs from both Rooney and Lambert, most of the sparring was between the two frontrun ners. Holding aloft two pam phlets by Carr, Rocca said this is what we have come to expect from the local MPP. He then asked him why he didn't introduce a private mem ber's bill into the Legislature or attend more than two of the 30 meetings of the local property tax reform co-chaired by Hogg and Flynn. Retorted an angry Carr from his seat at the table, "Why don't we ask Flynn just how much work I've put into this, why not ask him?" - "I know what he'll say," responded Rocca. "He'll say you flunked out" When he took to the podi um, Carr blasted Rocca for either being "naive" or "misrep resenting the public" because under Queen's Park rules, not everyone gets to introduce pri vate members bills. Later in the meeting, as the spirited exchange grew more heated between the two candi dates, a question about health care prompted Carr to say, with three children, he wanted the health care system to be protect ed, and added his party had built health care. It elicited a loud response from the crowd. Rocca went on to say that Harris has always been for a two-tiered health system, adding he will dismantle it in the say way as Ralph Klein in Alberta and Newt Gingrich in the United States. To which Lambert coun tered, "If you don't think the Liberals are going to butcher the health care system, you're living in a fantasy land." / Oakville's Most Popular Dance Studio r twice m o l w e lc o m e s B ill H o ta lin g from Broadway Dance Centre (N e w Y o ik C ity) for Special Summer Workshops • L e a d D a n c e r in W es t S id e S tory, P ipp in , M a rn e A ls o fe a tu re d in n um erou s m usic v id eo s a n d th e m o v ie W hen H a rry M e t S a lly A d ju d ic a to r a t R hythm D an ce Festival '9 4 August 21, 22, 23, 24 • Jazz • Tap • Lyrical • Funky and Hip & Hop Su m m er Technique Classes July thru A u gu st P rivate C lasses A lso A vailable T ic k e ts N o w A v a i la b le f o r R e c ita l O a te s S a t u r d a y , J u n e 1 7 7 p . m . , S u n d a y J u n e 1 8 2 p . m . 1428 Speers Rd.
