Oakville Beaver Weekend 5Sunday, April 11, 1999 DARE has two-wheel message By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Halton students enrolled in upcoming DARE classes have a treat in store: a new police motorcycle painted in the pro­ gram's trademark colours. In fact, the two-wheeled educational tool will appear at several events taking place elsewhere in Canada and in the United States. As long as it helps spreads the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) message, Halton Regional Police Constable Jim Valade is all for it. "I'm a big believer in the DARE pro­ gram," said Valade, a DARE instructor. "Whatever we can do is fine by me." The motorcycle - a 1500 cc 1998 Suzuki Intruder - is Valade's property, but he volunteered its services for use in con­ junction with the program. To his knowl­ edge, it's the only one of its kind. "It's another first for Halton Regional Police," said Valade, a 22-year veteran with the RCMP and Halton. "This is another chance to go out and fight the good fight for promoting DARE. DARE began in Halton 11 years ago. Valade will celebrate his first year as a DARE instructor this fall. To aid in the motorcycle's role as a promotional device, Valade approached Rick Hill, owner of Hi Tech Collision on Speers Road about a custom paint job. Hill, who said he has a six-year-old who will eventually experience DARE, was more than happy to help. "I'm 100% behind the DARE pro­ gram," said Hill, who also completed some minor body work. "I'm really impressed." Decals will be applied to the machine courtesy of Dee Signs in Burlington. Valade said he will be busy this sum­ mer displaying his motorcycle during Police Week, the Sound of Music Festival Parade, International Police Day in Strathroy and the DARE National Convention in Washington, D.C. "Police administration and the DARE Halton Board are really supportive of any proactive program like DARE," said Valade.
